Using Free and Open Source Multimedia Software in the upper primary to
VCE Classroom

Please bring your own laptop (Mac or PC)
PLEASE NOTE: GIMP, Pencil & Inkscape are cross platform, whilst Anim8or
is Windows only [and not actually open source] – if you have a Mac, you
will need Windows installed on a separate partition to utilise this
piece of software.

With the increasing costs of ICT in schools, as teachers we are always
looking for free or inexpensive software that will provide valuable
experiences for our students. Ross Taylor uses such software in his own
classroom, and has selected some of his favourites for this workshop.

This course will give you a hands-on approach to using a variety of free
multimedia (animation and graphics) software that can be used in a range
of domain areas. Suitable for technology and arts teachers, we will
focus on 2D drawing tools (GIMP and Inkscape), 2D Animation (Pencil) and
3D animation (Anim8or). This software is FREE for students to use at
home and at school. This course is suitable for teachers of Upper
Primary – VCE. No previous experience with these software tools is
necessary, although you will require a laptop (with power) for use
during the day.

Ross has taught in both Australia and the UK and is currently the
Director of ICT at a Girls’ Secondary College in the Southern suburbs of
Melbourne. He specialises in programming, multimedia tools and using Web
2.0 technologies with his students, as well as the development of
student friendly assessment tools and techniques.
