Well, you asked for open source... Compiz lets you do this under linux
if you have a 3d graphics card - install compizconfig-settings-manager
and there is an option to annotate the desktop when you press a
certain key combination. And that's to say nothing of the sexy desktop
effects - put a mac to shame they will :)
