I think it comes down to which desktop is easier to use. Myself,
because I am used to how Windows works, I find KDE easier than Gnome.
KDE has the 'icons' or launchers in a familiar spot (lower left
corner) and something similar to the Windows Start menu, while Gnome
has drop down menus across the top and seems slightly more obscure to me.
Maybe download the ISOs for Ubuntu (Gnome) and Kubuntu (KDE) and try
them out. Both are easy and quick to install, and the networking
configuration is not too hard either.
