Hi,

I came across the news about Ultranet yesterday and prepared a blog
about it for the free software community

It's really sad to hear about some of these problems facing education
- - on the other hand, maybe this month has been a real wake-up call for
people that they can't trust Facebook, Google, Ultranet or any other
cloud service the way people have been trusting these services up to now.

Based on the information I could find from The Age and other sources,
I've provided a brief report for the free software community about the
situation in Victoria.  My blog is syndicated by the Free Software
Foundation Europe and various Linux distributions and a lot of these
very capable people are now aware of Ultranet:

I understand the press don't always get things right and I'd be
interested to get some feedback from people at the coalface to help me
prepare a follow-up blog entry closer to Ultranet's shutdown.

Regardless of how Ultranet proceeds, I'd also be interested to
understand what experiences schools have had with genuinely free/open
source software and whether there is anything the free software
movement can do to help avoid a repeat of this situation and provide
lasting solutions for education.
