The Readers Cup is a competition for students who enjoy reading.
Usually there are between two and six teams of between two and four
students. Students are given four books to read that have been selected.
There will be four questions on each of the four books. One point is
awarded for each correct answer.
One book is selected to be presented as a creative piece. Students can
select from the following choices:
Develop a game show
Design and explain a poster
Compose a song or rap
Make and explain mural
Create an A - Z of the novel
This is your life
Character interviews
News presentation
Teams are awarded one point for each of the following:
Involvement by each group member
A description of the processes used to develop your activity
Knowledge of the story and underlying themes
Effort and organisation
Creativity
Quality
Success in engaging the audience with the presentation
Completion within 5 minutes.
Students are made aware of the criteria when they sign up to participate
in the Readers Cup.
Students, teachers and parents love the Readers Cup.

Rules
Teams need to consist of 2 to 4 students.
Year 7 and 8 teams can only be composed of students in those year levels;
year 9 and 10 teams can include students in years 7 and 8.
4 books will be used in the final.
Individuals need not read all the books to participate.
Points are scored by answering four questions on each book (1 point per
correct answer) as well as a creative presentation focussing on one book
on the list. Notes are not to be brought or used on the night (except for
the Creative Round).
Creative round presentations can be chosen from this list:
Develop a game show
Design and explain a poster
Compose a song or rap
Make and explain mural
Create an A Z of the novel
"This is your life"
Character interviews
News presentation
Create and explain a showbag
Develop and explain a ToonDoo, Comiq, etc
1 point will be allocated for each of the following:
Involvement by each group member
A description of the processes used to develop your activity
Knowledge of the story and underlying themes
Effort and organisation
Creativity
Quality
Success in engaging the audience with the presentation
Completion within 5 minutes.
Teams may challenge an answer by putting their hands up immediately after
the answer has been revealed by the host. It is too late to challenge an
answer once the next question has begun to be asked.
The judges decision is final.
The winning teams will receive a perpetual trophy that must be kept in
good condition and returned to SLAV before the following years final.
** Timeline for schools interested in participating in the 2009 Victorian
State Final for the Readers Cup.
Term 1.
School based heats.
Register interest in competing in State Final with the School Library
Association of Victoria.
Term 2.
School based heats.
Last week of term - all suggestions for books to be used in State Final
due in.
Term 3.
School based finals to decide entrants for State Final.
Mid-term decision made as to which books will be used in the final.
Last week of term schools given the list of books that will be used in
the State Final.
Term 4.
Mid-November State Final held in Melbourne.
Final to take the form of:
Semi finals (2 or 3 top scoring teams from each semi final to go through
to grand final depending on how many teams enter).
Grand final.
