I second that; you'll want to carefully monitor what's going on - much
easier on a local setup. I've just started using elgg with my students
- it is more akin to a social networking site like myspace than just a
blog.
Another option is to check out globabl teacher/global student:
http://www.education.vic.gov.au/teacher/Global/default.htm run by the
dept of education, though I have heard of some technical problems with
that setup (yes, technical problems from the department of education!)
