[Moodle] RE: moodle Digest, Vol 49, Issue 19

I think the focus of the discussion should not be the cost for is not a worker worthy of their wages but the lack of budgeting within the school for PD activities. This could be as a result of School Management decisions or government /department policy. One question I would ask is has any provision been made by the funding authorities (government/department) to compensate for the added costs of remote schools to travel to attend PDs.

Thanks for being prepared to run the PD during the holidays Kevork unfortunately I will not be there as I will be painting the house (only been waiting for 2 1/2 years for someone to pick the colour.

Hi Kent,

I have to say you write in a very considered manner and no there is no offence taken - just mutual respect !

I am concerned that I am getting out of my depth speaking on behalf of VITTA so I have escalated this to Adrian Janson the President of VITTA to speak , if he wishes to , on VITTA's behalf regarding this thread.

The only other comment I would make is that your focus is the cost. You did not seem to acknowledge any single aspect of the points I raised under what teachers get for the fee and then to decide if that is value or not. Your omission suggests that a PD is a PD no matter what you get or what is covered or who is standing out the front.

I believe VITTA will be probably run with the numbers even if they make a loss.

My preference would always be to be with my family during the holidays or after school, but that would be slightly off topic as it is not part of our professional discussion .....

I sign off with respect for your position and empathy for the difficulties you and others may be under with seriously depleted PD budgets in many schools be it city or rural .

Take Care

Hi Kevork, and VITTA
if I may, permit me to respectfully, make an observation on behalf of rural staff and as a PLN leader for Wimmera.
Up front, I have no idea just who is involved, how many people, hours or similar it has taken to prepare your course but...to the layman(ie me, and similar)...
Even if just 10 people participate at approx $600 per head that's $6000.
Now, up here (in the bush) the PD I just ran cost $33 a head (admitted some of that was sponsored) and we had the school provide, at no cost, the venue.

You've got to admit - these do raise some questions...
Additionally, the costs to get from a rural site to the city plus, potential accomodation etc costs..

So, you can understand my concerns and please, this is not a negative comment, just an observation.

Kent.

Hi Folks,

Thanks for your feedback. Obviously VITTA would love to know what teachers think. And I take the liberty to reply on their behalf.

These are activities that VITTA has to budget, pay rent, staff and allocate time to provide a service. At the end of the day VITTA does not make much of a profit and if these sessions run at a loss as they often do, if there aren't enough people attending.

Normally this course runs for 5 sessions each of 2 hours so teachers can do homework in between sessions rather than have the whole lot in one block of 9 or 10 hours.
In that sense this was an effort on VITTA's behalf to try to bring this course to our rural and regional teachers with minimal disruption.

Teachers receive the following:
   1. A textbook which is a full course.
   2. An installation DVD with ubuntu and utilities to set up your own MySQL and Apache server
   3. Hands on practice installing your own Ubuntu MySQL /Apache server
   4. 13 Learning Activities each of several pages carefully illustrated written for teaching gently with a set of exercises at the end of each learning activity
   5. A set of 12 assessment tasks for use with mobile devices up to desktops on multiple operating systems, from Yr 8 to Yr 12 standard including Software Development
   6. Relational database design and implementation theory and practice
   7. Two table and three table relational database practical tasks using MySQL and PHP.

Furthermore, whenever I have provided this type of PD there has been ongoing support for many months with emails to me , phone calls and other requests for help. This is an extra demand on time and expertise willingly provided that is unpaid and unquantified.

I am not sure what will work for others and that is a decision for each school. For the record I did deliver the same PD last year to a group of TAFE teachers for a day who did get a lot out of it - this being TAFE teachers who teach certificate and diploma courses.

Over to you Kent and Mark ....... :))

Take care

I have seen the announcements for this course for some time now and have
wanted to go. I live in Alexandra so it is difficult to there by 4.30pm. I
was very excited to see that it was being run as a full day in the holiday
and I have booked.

My school does not have a large budget in the IT area so I am paying for
this one myself.

Yes, it is a lot of money but I have wanted to learn PHP for some time now.
I have looked at online tutorials but get lost. I learn best if I can hear
someone talk about it or demonstrate and then do it myself. I struggle to
learn from books.

I must say I am very excited to finally get the opportunity.
