[Moodle] Backup

On a MAC or Linux box make sure that the folder has write permissions. On
Linux the web user is www-data but if you have a sufficiently secure system
you can create a world writeable folder somewhere in a safe partition.
To check the permissions of a folder open a terminal on your Mac, cd to the
directory containing the folder and do a "ls -l". Ditto for Linux.

Hi Colin
In a Windows environment, this is how I back up. On a MAC - I assume it is
the same process. Not sure if you can back up all courses at once, but it is
pretty quick doing a course at a time - only takes 2 - 3 minutes once you
get the knack of it.
1. Login to Moodle.
2. Select the course you would like to backup in the "My courses" section.
3. Select "Backup" in the "Administration" section.
4. The "Course backup" page will display all of the course items and
corresponding user data
with check boxes in front of each of them.
5. Clear the check mark from each "User Data" check box. This action
removes the student
data files from the backup process.
6. Select "Yes" for the "Metacourse" dropdown box.
7. Select "Course" for the "Users" dropdown box.
8. Select "No" for the "Logs" dropdown box.
9. Select "No" for the "User Files" dropdown box.
10. Select "Yes" for the "Course files" dropdown box.
11. Click on the "Continue" button.
12. The "Course backup" page displays the backup name that Moodle has
automatically
assigned, and the course items to be included in the backup process.
13. You may rename the backup file, at this time, if you wish.
14. Click the "Continue" button.
15. The "Course backup" page displays the steps Moodle has taken during the
backup process,
and whether the process was completed successfully or not.
16. Click on the "Continue" button.
17. The "backupdata" page displays all of the backup files that have been
completed.
18. To save a copy of the backup file to your computer, right click on the
name of the backup
file.
19. Select "Save Target As".
20. Select the folder that you would like to save the backup file in.
21. Click on the "Save" button.
Kind regards

Subject: [Moodle] Backup
Hi all
I've been running Moodle for a couple of classes for 18 months without a
problem on a MAC. However, we've NEVER done a backup!!
The Techie who set it up has moved on and I'm not sure how to go about
backing up. The new techie has lost the very good 'brown-tree' book on
Moodle.
Anyone with help? I've checked the Moodle backups docs and I don't
understand it all - although the Techie might.
Regards
COLIN
