Hi Kent and moodle members,

I don't subscribe to the Moodle list so I haven't been following the recent
discussion concerning the PD.

I do understand the point you raise Kent about the cost of the all day PHP /
mySQL event being held by Kevork during the break. The maths that you used
as an example - with 10 delegates attending at $600 per head sounds really
great - and in such a case would mean that VITTA was making a profit (and a
decent one at that). However, our bottom line with events is made up of a
number of factors. We are of course accountable to our members and I for
one - do not want to stand up at the VITTA AGM and say that we have made a
'loss' - which may well be the case. In the past, VITTA members have been
very critical of our project management and accounting - especially in the
cases of running events at a loss. We do tolerate this to a certain extent,
especially when it is an important event that we can offset with another
event that is making some money.

Generally, the funds that VITTA makes through its PD is minimal. The budget
does not just cover the speaker's fee, the venue / catering costs, etc. -
but also covers the cost to VITTA in terms of management hours (which can be
a hidden cost). We 'could' set the rate for an event like this lower -
which would then mean that more people could possibly be interested, but
then the financial cut-off for us might be at quite a large number of
attendees. At this stage, the event you are referring to is still not
financially viable - one or two more registrations and it will possibly be.
This is not an official statement as to whether the event will run or not -
but if we are looking at a loss we do need to think long and hard about
whether it is worth running the event and how much of a loss is bearable for
the perceived benefit.

I personally think that the $600 is fair given the length and quality of the
course and resources - but I appreciate that school PD budgets can be a bit
tight.

Cheers,

Adrian
