Thanks to Alan and Stephen for helping out with this one.

I've managed to get a virtual host for the school site plus some aliases
working. Yay!

The next bridge to cross will be the community arts web site with the
registered outside domain. So we'll see what happens when we are ready to
proceed.

Cheers

Chris

It would involve modifying the httpd.conf to use virtual hosts. There is an
example at the bottom of the httpd.conf usually. I have included the sample
below. Sorry but I don't know Chris's e-mail address to add him as a cc:.

#
# Use name-based virtual hosting.
#
#NameVirtualHost *:80

#
# VirtualHost example:
# Almost any Apache directive may go into a VirtualHost container.
# The first VirtualHost section is used for requests without a known
# server name.
#
#<VirtualHost *:80>
# ServerAdmin webmaster at dummy-host.example.com
# DocumentRoot /www/docs/dummy-host.example.com
# ServerName dummy-host.example.com
# ErrorLog logs/dummy-host.example.com-error_log <----- not necessary
# CustomLog logs/dummy-host.example.com-access_log common <----- not
necessary
#</VirtualHost>

Subject: [Moodle] Using Apache Virtual Hosts on school web server

Hi folks,

I'm hoping someone here might be able to help me with sorting out my
school's new web server.

I've build a LAMP server in a dedicated server here at school. It is now
live to the world. Initially it will host our Moodle, school website and a
site for a local community arts project that the school is involved in.

I am having trouble figuring out how to use virtual name hosting in Apache.

I can place the school web site (a temporary static web page at the moment)
in a directory under the /www web root and set it as a virtual host, but I
can't figure out how to serve up other local web installations such as a
media wiki site I'm using for a Year7/8 project.

If I leave the school site at the root level, without a virtual server then
I can access the school site and the mediawiki site:

Eg www.lornep12.vic.edu.au <http://www.lornep12.vic.edu.au/> and
www.lornep12.vic.edu.au/me78b

But given that the school site will be made with Expression Engine I'd
rather keep it physically separate from the root.

Do I need BIND as a local DNS for this?

I've been through all kinds of documentation and still can't make it do what
I want. My TSI isn't much help as he's as new to Linux as I am.

Thanks and cheers
