In a very detailed study, Moodle compared well against Blackboard. Of course this is a study of university students but several aspects of this study are still sigificant for secondary schools.

An interesting reflection. This university was spending over $1 million for the commercial product licence. Imagine what that kind of money could do in the hands of teachers, mentors, moodle courses, moodle development etc.

Lots of numbers but good to read the student feedback and final opinions (scroll to the page bottom)

It is easy for schools to take for granted the savings that computer managers can make when implementing open source software. If the code or feature that you want is missing, there is no harm in spending some money to have it developed and contributed to the code pool. Of course, everybody will benefit :-)
