I've been looking in depth at MMOS tools, and this is what I've determined so far. This is non-gospel, except for the text in italics.

The thing to keep in mind is whether students can show requisite key skills and key knowledge using the software.

For this reason, the use of pre-made design templates  (for websites or any other type of solution) is not be acceptable since students would not be demonstrating their knowledge of design principles. Students would need to design their own templates from scratch.

If the use of CMS obviated students' need to know any other key knowledge (e.g. file naming and management, choosing and using formats and conventions, data manipulation) or any software requirement that we would probably expect to be announced (e.g. absolute and relative linking, the use of style sheets/CSS etc)  then you might have trouble if students used it.

On the subject of software choice, while websites are the obvious first choice (and a good one), there are other valid multimodal authoring tools.
While VCAA has not yet published its software function requirements for the MMOS outcome, as long as the software can achieve the following goals, it should be acceptable:

•         It contains a variety of types of data

•         It requires internet connection to be operable, as it is an online solution

•         It provides the opportunities to educate a world-wide audience

•         It communicates the findings/conclusions regarding the hypothesis.

This list comes from an authoritative source (which I'll not name here since it was in personal correspondence)

The fact that the study design does not name "website" for U4O1 (as they currently do for U3O1) means they must be thinking in a broader context of possible solutions.

This means that an online slideshow should qualify as an MMOS, but probably only if it's created in kiosk mode to give the developer complete control over navigation. In kiosk mode a slideshow is virtually indistinguishable from a website in appearance and functionality.

To get it online, there are several online slideshow creation tools (Google Slides being an obvious one, prezi is another). Microsoft Mix (mix.office.com<http://mix.office.com>) and some other online services allows you to share normal PPT slideshows online.

As long as the MMOS software allows students to employ multiple communication modes (2 or more of text, still pictures, video/animation, audio/speech/music/sound FX, gesture, Australian sign language - maybe even  braille, semaphore, morse code, mime and interpretative dance), can educate, and can communicate ideas, it should qualify for U4O1 in 2016+.

I share your problem with the Adobe tools but my students are having a lot of success with Audacity, Expression Web, Paint.NET and Inkscape. It's not the Adobe Creative Suite but until Adobe develop a more realistic educational licensing system it will do.

This question might be answered already, but regarding multimodal online solution, are we just saying making a website with different forms of communications on it? And if yes is it appropriate to use some sort of content management system to host said website. I know for some of my student using a CMS would allow them to focus on creating the content.

I ask this as not all of my students have access to the full range of adobe tools.
