It's not just wikipedia that has published hoaxes and fake data.
Traditional print media has long been affected by this.

See for example
Jakob Maria Mierscheid (fictitious member of German Parliament)Ernest Lalor
"Ern" Malley (famous Australian poetry hoax)
Lillian Virginia Mountweazel

and the word "esquivalience" which was put in a dictionary to detect
companies who copy it.

TomTom maps also contain fake streets called 'trap streets" that allow them
to detect companies who copy their map data. I have one (Nathan Drive)
running through my block of land.
