[Year 12 IT Apps] itapps Digest, Vol 123, Issue 51

Hi Sandra,

Scratch I think personally not so much with Year 9 although there are considerable advanced resources around.

I like the Blockly environment and using it to teach students a real world programming language (albeit not OO) in Javascript. Its all drag and drop and then export to code, it's actually quite similar to Scratch as it comes from the same development root.

I have an environment set up here http://grovesit.weebly.com/blockly-environment.html that you can play with.

Gamemaker if you stop using the GUI and use GML script instead is quite powerful for teaching computational logic and programming conventions, again there is quite a bit about.

I have a GML course going up shortly at www.virgilrules.com which will be in addition to the semester long GUI course that is already there. It should be finished by week 1 of the term break for you to use if you wish.

Kind Regards,

I have been using GameMaker and Alice at year 9. Alice is a new addition as GameMaker seemed to attract students who were there to play games and no interest in learning about programming.

I was thinking of changing to doing the Hour of Code, then going on to Scratch and then Alice at Year 9. I am still investigating as I haven't used Scratch but it looked like a good step between Hour of code and Alice.

I would love to hear if anyone has tried Scratch with year 9s.

Re: A research question...

I am the only "IT" teacher trained in my school also, teaching an allotment of Year 9 IT, Year 10 IT, 2x Year 11 UT and IT Applications. I have built the curriculum from the ground up in both Year 9 and Year 10 - offering what i believe to be engaging and fun elements of IT. This is the first year i've had side by side year 11 classes which is fantastic for looking towards the future for numbers in Year 12 (5th year teaching, 4th year of VCE IT).

My Year 9 consists of Animating in Flash, Game Development in Gamemaker and a theory unit titled Computers & Society which has a strong focus on how technology is used and how it changes our lives. This unit also has as strong focus in video games and their impact on adolescents.
Year 10 is Webdesign and Development, using HTML/CSS/Dreamweaver/Photoshop, and Networking(which is just theory /yawn). For next year i'm looking at modifying my curriculum in both year levels, replacing Gamemaker in Year
9 and Networks in Year 10.

What are other IT teachers out there teaching at these levels that is fun and engaging for students? I've looked at Unity as a possible replacement for networks in Year 10 but not sure at this stage. I don't want their to be much of an overlap with the Year 11 study design as a lot of my year 11 students are finding doing networks again a bit dry and it makes it tough to teach some of them. 9 and 10 are also just semester long subjects so they are restricted by time.

Cheers

hi Ben

We use Unity at year 10 (not me )
At year 9 we do Lego - as robotics - a big investment at first but the students do enjoy it (not me either) - semester length

We used to also do animation as a whole semester and multimedia as a whole semester but those course were crunched out by the new improved year 9 curriculum

At year 7 we do Google apps for education 5 weeks, sketch up [3D drawing](5 wks), scratch (5 wks) and movie editing [sony movie studio](5 wks) = one semester

year 11 and 12 numbers still dwindling this year Sof Dev 8 students (me), IT Apps (11 students - not me) & IT 1, 2 ( 12 students - not me)

So we have four IT qualified teachers ? and also two very competent IT teachers (not formally qualified) not teaching IT

?.
