Hi,

I don't have any experience with these, but another option is to look at what you can do with microcontrollers. This will involve some electronics work as well, but quite simple.

We teach Robotics (as part of Design Technology, not Information Technology) here at several year levels, starting at Year 7. The kids can build simple robots or other devices and program themselves. They use the PICAXE microcontroller but there are other possibilities such as Arduino too. The teacher is Pat McMahon who has been doing this for years, and runs training sessions several times a year. Some info can be found at:

http://www.dvallcoll.vic.edu.au/?page_id=47

For the cost of one Lego kit you could build a class set of PICAXE devices!

(This is my first post here as I'm teaching ITA next year, hope this isn't too off topic!)

Regards,
Richard

Subject: [Year 12 IT Apps] Robotics

Hi,

I teach programming to Year-10 students. I want to see if I can incorporate/demonstrate programming using a robot. I see that there are "Lego Mindstorm" and "Bioloid Beginner Robot Kit" that can be used (both costing around $500 each). If anyone has taught Robotics, can you suggest which one is a good option.
