Hi All,

If you would like a fun challenge over the holidays to help keep your mind sharp and learn a new skill, read on...or if you just want something to tell really bright students about then this may also be for you...

Rosalind is a new platform designed to help people learn about bioinformatics by solving computational problems, for example the first one just gets you to count the occurrences of A, T, G, and C in a 1000 character DNA sequence, but they get trickier and more scientifically useful as you progress.

If you know some programming, you can get started at: http://rosalind.info/problems/list-view/

If you know no programming, you should start here: http://rosalind.info/problems/list-view/?location=python-village

This is a lot like Project Euler: http://projecteuler.net ...

...but a lot easier to get started with.

If you have considered Project Euler before, but not wanted to learn the programming aspect, I recommend visiting the Rosalind Python village and then trying Euler again. Rosalind has put together what I think is the best introduction to Python I've seen on the internet. They tell you just enough to get started with Rosalind and Euler without overwhelming you.

Happy holidays!
