[Year 12 IT Apps] Changes to Privacy Legislation (ATKINSON-BUCK, Damien)

Sate and national privacy laws begin to struggle .. not entirely unexpected
when we consider the creaks and groans from other bits of legislation as
these "legally disruptive" technologies go mainstream and trans-national.
Often, it is the law that has to play catchup and users that need to read
their licence agreements. I recall something about a famous Melbourne
defamation case that looked at where the information was hosted as compared
to where it was viewed (and briefly, where it travelled via from source to
destination). It isn't as easy as it all looks.

In addition, I discovered that those particular services that fell over
during the Amazon cloud outage selected the cheapest storage option, not the
premium service option designed for more critical web services and are
mirrored across different continents. It all comes down to money. As one
user noted, although you may host your information externally in a cloud, a
solid backup strategy means that you plan to have a local and an off-site
backup.
