Can I just go back to Kent's email - talking about "country folk". Any of
these PDs that run for 2 hours a day over several days/weeks are absolutely
useless for "country folk". The costs in travel time and fuel become
ridiculous. From Traralgon this PD would have cost $600 + 10 hours travel
time ($400?) + 1500km travel ($500?) + coverage for after lunch classes on
the five days ($400?), a total cost of about $1,900 or $190 per PD hour.
So we do need to come up with alternative models for PD for ALL teachers in
the state.
The cost issue is another one of course. While at Traralgon I was involved
in a program called "Gourmet PD". This was way back in the early 90s.
Facilities were supplied by local schools - but they did see this as a
chance to make money out of their otherwise unused facilities in
after-school hours. It would seem that this trend is still alive and well.
As a semi-retired teacher there is no way I can afford this sort of cost for
PD - so how do I access PD that is relevant to me and allows me to satisfy
VIT requirements. This would also apply to beginning teachers who can only
get contract/CRT work and staff on family leave who have no access to school
funds for PD.
