[Year 12 IT Apps] social networking sites(facebook etc)..

Kent what is the primary reason for going to use FB/Social site?
What are the outcomes you hope to enhance by using it or similar tools? Is it for student engagement, better communication, a substitute intranet or simply the "me too" that you often see with regard to new trends? The plethora of online tools and social networking sites that are available today has made me extremely critical of how I approach them - often I think that it is a case of the tail wagging the dog. Do we adjust our curriculum to fit these new tools or do we pick the tools that best suit the curriculum?
There is often a case for both, but it helps if you have identified the areas that you think need tweaking first before you jump into a particular site. Then you can pick the tool that best suits what you are trying to achieve.
Doesn't matter how you package and deliver the curriculum - if its broke, then re-wrapping in a shiny new box won't fix it in the long term. Once the novelty wears off. . .
What do you think needs fixing? I am sure people have their ideas about what sites are best for what.

PS - Personally I won't go anywhere near Facebook as they seem very cavalier with regard to privacy and want to keep moving the goal posts.
