[Year 12 IT Apps] social networking sites(facebook etc)..

I have agree with Brett on this. One Minefield I don't want to
negotiate.

But on a related note I am trying to write a Cyber bullying creed and
would really love so input from other people.

Basically it works along side the electronic communications policy buy
works like a statement of intent call students to action if they witness
it as well.

Hope people can help?

Andrew

I wouldn't be using Facebook at all in class, to describe the privacy
issues around it as a minefield when used with your students would be a
gross understatement and your chances of survival probably better.

Really just don't use it. If you want a social network use a Ning, the
basic one is 3 bucks a month and you have a good deal of control over
what goes on and how it goes on...a much better solution.

Like most schools we already have enough difficulties keeping up with
cyber bullying and safety as a third party let alone (heaven helps us)
when directly involved and taking responsibility for the actions of the
users.

The best strategy for use of Facebook in class is to take two aspirin
and have a cup of tea and a lie down....it will pass.

Cheers

Has anyone used these Facebook or similar sites as a 'contemporary
learning too' ?
What sort of responses has it had?
What type of strategies for its use were implemented (or discussed) ?
Other ideas....

I am looking/considering this option as to 'embrace' some of the social
technologies being used presently. Have had a brief chat with my
principal on the matter and he asked me to do some investigation on the
matter.

So, colleagues out there, what are some of your experiences, plusses,
minuses, interestings???

Please email responses as I am compiling an electronic folder of this
information for a presentation.
Am also happy to look at professional reading of published papers on
this matter.

Thanks..

I do the same. I give my students 1 period (75 mins). Closed book test.
Good exam prep.

I agree, and I plan to get them to do it without an open book or test,
for good exam prep!

Thanks Guys

I give them 2 periods (95 min) but rarely do they need it all.

I never let them use cheat sheets, notes or texts; they can't use them
in the exam and U4O2 is prime exam practice.

I find the only time to let them have open book tests is when the books
are pretty well useless anyway.

Open-book tests are not a good practice, I reckon.
The weaker kids spend most of their time desperately looking things up.
The better kids don't use the books because they know the material.

In short, if they need the books, they're not ready for the test.

2.2 cents' and worth every bit of it. ;-)

Hi ICT People,

I have had a look at some sample Outcome 2 tasks, which are a case study
with about 10 questions relating to data security and legal
responsibility.

How long do you give the students to complete this task? 2 periods?

Also the students are asking me if it is open book? What's the go there?

Thanks from a first half year IT Apps teacher!
