[Year 12 IT Apps] Games Design with Game Maker

Looks very tempting - especially since I am currently watching a group of Yr9's constructing their first games with said program with very little help from me. ( my skills at using/interpreting the "Help" dialog are very good thank goodness) I also like the Bio on the website invitation!
However I am not sure that I am going to be able to make the most of the opportunity since I use a Mac and don't think I will be able to practice it. I have installed Gamemaker on a virtual box image of Vista and Win 7 and I can create the games, but as soon as I try to run them, I am told that my graphics settings don't allow me to run the game. I have tried allocating more graphics memory to the virtual machine, enabled 3D acceleration, reduced the screen resolution etc etc etc but I cannot get the compiled game to run.
Anyone else using Macs had this problem and solved it? What have I missed? What do Mac people do with Gamemaker? Google has failed to help me on this one.
If I can solve this one, I may be able to justify attendance to the powers that be!

Thanks in advance

Game Maker is a program that allows you to make exciting computer games, without the need to write a single line of code. Making games with Game Maker is a lot of fun and allows you to create professional looking games within very little time.
