Interesting suggestion Mark. However, this may also cause a hiccup as the ability to create a database within a spreadsheet also exists(for those that know how to). Thus, an appropriate marking allocation will need to also be offered depending on which alternative approach is taken.

Here's one simple change that might satisfy some.

Change U4O1 to read...

Outcome 1
On completion of this unit the student should be able to use a relational database management system or a spreadsheet to solve an ongoing information problem, and evaluate how well the solution meets the information needs of an organisation.


Students would still get some database experience (U3O2). Teachers could offer U4O1 as a database or a spreadsheet task or even offer both and give students a choice.
