Hi Folks,
The students have searched and found archives of messages. Currently these are public to encourage interest and participation in these lists just like the search function on the Edulists site. We could make all these private and require passwords that people will lose and ask for again and again ...... No disrespect intended here, just stating what happens in reality. How bad is it if a student sees a teacher asking a question ? or learning or expanding their knowledge ?
The approach I have taken is to make edulists as open as possible except for sample SACs , exams and other assessment material which lives behind a password.
There are other closed lists that operate, but you can't find them unless invited.
In the 12 years edulists has been running, and more than 100,000 emails later we haven't had anyone scream or bleed or otherwise get into trouble.
As a teacher as opposed to the Edulists administrator, if a student of mine found a thread I was in and wanted to ask me what I was trying to find out or investigate, I would be glad to share with him/her the issue or discussion and ask for his input or help. In fact, often I mention the content of some of the threads going on with the lists. There are lecturers, industry reps, and other non teachers on the lists as well. I
If a teacher from any part of the world did a search on a topic and landed on the Edulists site and found it of interest and joined the list without hindrance or obstacles, that would be a victory for education. To block access with passwords and hurdles would be a defeat as we want instant information and would hardly come back the day after if we don't get it straight away.
Just my thoughts. I do hope people can see where I am coming from .
Happy to hear other views.
Take Care

Thanks Margaret,
We do tend to overlook some things.
We have two choices on this security issue -
either
we need to restrict access to the list messages to authorised list members -
don't ask me how, I'm not a security expert.
or
we must be careful what we say, so that students or other "non-members" of
the list cannot gain any "useful" or personal infomation that we do not want
them to have.
Answer?
What do we want? And what is actually possible?
One of the joys of the Internet, and also one of the biggest problems, is
the open access of information to all of us.
Where do these lists need to go?
