Hi Ros,
unlike your good self, my network doesnt have the set up where I can do some of the things you have done and that we have previously discussed either here or at the various face to face times we've met.
Essentially, I am limited to what the software we have available can do, added to that, the students I have this year are, shall we say...just plain hard yakka! (last year's group of 15 was easier than these 3 and a damn site more co-operative!). The proverbial brick wall is more intelligent!
At this stage I have just battled to get them through oc1 and am about to start the prelim work for oc2...should prove interesting..
The visual thinking..might use a simple tool like word art here to keep it simple, and they know how to use it already..theres a bonus. We used dreamweaver last year but will stick with FP this year. (KIS principle.)

Hi Bill,
Personally I would suggest students choose from the following tools for virtual team collaboration:
· Discussion forum (personally I would consider this as absolutely essential)
· Wiki
· FAQ
· Blog (perhaps with ability to attach files)
· IM/chat
· File uploading and sharing
· Polls or surveys
· Email distribution/mailing lists
I would also suggest that secure login is essential (can be shown with a screen dump which then links to the secure page) Some of my students used the drawing tools in word, paint or photoshop to create images of various tools.
Some of my students also used javascript/cgi scripts which can be easily found on the web - for login and chat etc
There are other tools for virtual teams (video conferencing etc) but above are probably the easiest to show - remember that the website only needs to be a prototype, it does not HAVE to work - I've installed WAMP because some of my students did go the extra mile so it will be nice for them to see their site working (although the ones that did the extra scripting tend to have their own web servers anyway!! One just uploaded his to the web for me to view which was nice! (Siteground is so cheap, well worth it!)
I might also say - the students just LOVED this outcome - some of mine are not strong and their attitude can at times be a little less than acceptable, but even in the design phase I had some who created page layout designs for 8 pages (when I expected them to create 3 pages and the site map)
I have yet to do Database, as I felt if I started with databases they would all be running for the door! O2 has given many of them much needed confidence.

This is my first time with this SAC 2 and I am a bit nervous as I approach it.
When you mention four collaborative tools, which ones do you have in mind? To me they might be email (Web 1.0), Private access blog, a wiki, rss feeds, various Google apps and perhaps Flickr and YouTube and TeacherTube.
But I would feel more reassured to hear from you and others what you expect your students to use in your class.

Hi Kent,
I allowed my students to use the predesigned website templates in FrontPage, but in themselves I do not believe that they would adequately provide a website for this outcome, as this only provides one of the tools for virtual team collaboration (I expected them to show at least 3, but said preferably 4 tools should be used, all but the weakest students found it easy enough to provide 4 tools for their website). In the end not many of them used the templates, but chose to design their site from the ground up.
The predesigned discussion template only provides discussion, and the project template provides a discussion and the customer support template provides a support forum and a FAQ page.
Certainly show them to your students, and they can certainly cut and paste sections of these templates into their own website, but they will still need to add much more to their virtual team website for it to address the requirements of this outcome.

Using front page, a web can be created incorporating a self registration page for a discussion forum. What is the consensus from you guys about using this as an option to allow 'secure virtual collaboration'.
Its available on the page selection feature with FP to build into webs and we are required to build into our site a virtual discussion forum.
Any comments on this idea.
Paula C. is this a legitimate approach?
Visual thinking.. anyone got a magic bullet for that one yet? We all had our different approaches last year on the VT approach.

It would have been better if D had read: D minimise inaccurate...
but, given that it didn't, D is the *most* correct answer
because, as has been pointed out, validation (manual or electronic) can
never prevent inaccurate data from entering a system; eg the form that the
entry operator is using may have been filled out incorrectly etc
And (for the sake of my pedantic soul) I no longer think spell checking
should be considered as a validation technique because it is not actually
checking the validity of the data, but the validity of the spelling.
"Correct" spelling is a convention: fish, fyche, or ghoti are all written
representations in the English language of those animals you eat with chips.
If the data were about types of animals found on a plate then 'ghoti' would
be correct, but becuase it does not follow convention it becomes difficult
to understand. And isn't that one of the purposes of conventions: to give us
a common frame of reference?

Yes, I include spell checking as validation, and I agree that the other
options are all bad, but I don't accept that validation can check that
data are accurate.
If a person's age is entered as 19 into a database, validation can't
prove the person is 19 or not. All it can do is tell whether 19 is a
reasonable age or not under the circumstances (e.g. 19 would not be
reasonable if the database stored data on newborn babies, or if it were
an old folk's home).
And looking at databases' validation options, you can check for data
range, type, existence, uniqueness, even its existence in a limited
list, but not "accuracy" :-)
The Q does not mention calculations, but what I tried to say was that
testing accuracy is a role of testing, not validation (and my kids
frequently confuse testing and validation (and evaluation, come to think
of it).
It's mainly annoying that the question contradicts the Study Design
glossary, which is mandated knowledge. But then again, it's Friday
afternoon and most things annoy me then.
