HI List
At Rutherglen High School, we have a Headstart program for Year 11 students going into Year 12. I have a new group going into year 12 and we havent had a Headstart before. I have them for 2 weeks. Is there anyone out there who runs a similar program so that I can have a look at what other schools do for their students in terms of a headstart and holiday homework.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Cheers
Jason Lappin

I have built a PHP based wiki/blog/profile system here at narre warren south p-12,
a few classes are using the blogs as a 'journal'.. nobody has used the wiki yet, but hopefully soon.
and because we have it 'onsite' we have full control over the content,
as in we can delete an entry then and there if it is innapropriate.
the 'profile' section is perhaps a little questionable, but better than the kids using the real myspace from school.
the newest feature is being able to include 'mp3' files in your blogposts, AKA podcasts.
maybe you could use something like this as part of your new IT course, and even non IT subjects.
anyways, there's a few screenshots at http://web.nwsc.vic.edu.au/narrespace
I would love it if a few other schools were 'beta testing' it for me too though... hint, hint...

Have started thinking about ideas for my next year's subject matters...
Will have IT from y8-y12 again and we have 3 new computer classrooms being built as I email this to the list..
Any course planners that got kids enthused that teachers would be willing to share would be great to look at to compare my current ideas to. My boss here is pretty much giving me a 'free reign' over my teaching matters so I do consider myself really lucky. I am limited by my technical skill though (which is why I didnt apply for Keith's job by the way!) but my enthusiasm for trying new things is what I pride myself in.
I am interested in the following...
- PHP/PYTHON programming for middle school level (idiot proof so that I can learn too!)
- Making multi-media that is simple but magic for kids for y7-10
- Alternatives to Microsoft (frankly, I'm bored with their products!)
- ***Using alternative platforms to Windows such as Unix/Linux as teaching tools ****
- Learning more about 'open source' products..
- Making middle school students more aware of features of a network that makes them feel like they 'own' it.
I am writing this list and posting it as I really want to seek some new directions at my school and kick some goals for the kids plus, I am personally interested in seeking some new directions for my own personal IT teachings and skill base to make me a better teacher! (corny but true!)
Any ideas or contributions would be greatly appreciated. Responses to my email listed below might be better than clogging up this list with responses.
I am not going through a middle age crisis...just seeking to improve myself and help my students share the passion that has kept me wanting to teach this subject after all this time!
ps..yep, I will be at the conference..waiting on appro to attend for all 3 days..have already submitted the forms to VITTA..
Cheers...

Robert,
>>A sure "smile to the dial". But at close to 3MB surely also an unwanted large download for those who don't want it. >>Can we please get back to only small downloads with links included. Why clog up the superhighway?
It also seems to be the same (?) as that posted only 2 days before.
