Hock,

No real PC requirements as long as you can use them to meet the training
package unit of competencies. I use Pentium 3 PCs with 20 GB HDD, 128Mb
RAM (at present), run XP Lite and about to partition the HDD to load
Ubuntu Linux. The students can then load relevant applications.

In respect to how long you may use them for - really depends on your
schools commitment to VET IT. I have some computers that are 4 to 5
years old and still used in my VET IT course. You need to look and
understand the ICA05 Training Package and its content - try and attend a
VITTA run PD session look out for details as I am not sure when we are
running one in Melbourne next.

Other hardware: I currently run an independent network with 4 servers,
with various network operating systems from Server 2003, Linux, and even
the old Windows NT ver. 4.0 . The 7 workstations we have attached to
this network and a laser printer - all installed by the students. I use
my VET network for the IT Apps students to understand Networking -
protocols, topology, security issues etc. This is a very hands-on way
for the students to understand networking and works well.

Try the VET IT list for more information.

Regards

Subject: [Year 12 IT Apps] VET IT Computers

Hello all,

We are currently redeploying some computers for use by students doing
the VET IT program. Can you please let me know what are the minimum
requirements for these students to use and what they mainly use for?
What is the duration for the use of these systems, one term or whole
year? Hope to hear from people out there who are offering the VET IT
courses.

Thank you.
