Are they standard Word version markup changes ? or drawing objects overlaying the original work ? Are they
typed or handwritten ? What is the software ?
Thanks

yes, all annotations are saved in their word docs. For non-Microsoft applications, I usually complete a
correction sheet by hand as well.

Sounds like a great system. Fully agree that students should be able to choose their email client.
How do the annotations with the "pen feature" get to students ? Is it a drawing object added to their word doc
?

I see very few are ignoring my blunder as I requested.
I am sitting down to lunch at a Sydney conference and am dying of embarrassment. My face is as red as my
T-shirt.
But to answer some of the replies:
Yes I use email regularly to communicate with my students, in fact it is my preferred method and most of the
teachers at my school do.
I encourage staff and students to communicate out of class hours so that questions can be promptly answered
and work quickly continued instead of waiting for the next class. I encourage the teachers to only communicate
using the students' school email account and to ignore personal emails such as from Hotmail etc. Having said
that, none of my students have yet to send me their journal entries as requested.
We did block such personal email accounts a few years ago but the students politely rebelled. They held a
students forum to discuss the issue and presented management with reasons to unblock these sites. Management
countered with some conditions - eg only to be used outside of class time. The students agreed and we lived
happily ever after except for the occasional miscreant who suffers the full force of the law. We have had a
couple of bullying instances but again once we are aware of the situations we deal with them promptly often
involving parents. We even put these conditions into our user policy.
I ask my students to submit their work electronically, which I correct using the pen feature of my tablet and
then send it back to them, copying my comments into my Electronic Chronicle. Our Year 5 and 6s classes work
the same way with their laptops. Which is why I hate the idea of students having to print all their work and
annotate outputs.
I also put the room change advice on the school's daily bulletin which is placed on our Intranet. It has taken
some time but students now regularly check the bulletin electronically. Having said that some staff and
students still like the paper copy.
PS The original blunder was supposed to go to my personal distribution list called ITA students but found
itself going to the ITA list instead.

We have gone exactly opposite direction....
School provision of email accounts is an unnecessary duplication of superior free services provided by major
world players. School services will (and are in my experience and research) inevitably underutilised EXCEPT
where virtually all crucial information for students is available ONLY through the same web interface (as
universities do) with no capacity for external pop3 collection etc..
The over head for schools is not much technically as mail servers are a cinch, but administratively and
legally it is a potential black hole. ANY issue arising from emails directed through the school servers is
the LEGAL responsibility of the school whether they relate to school issues or not, whether they are sent in
school time or not. This is not a problem for uni where there are fewer "adolescent" issues, less hysteria
from parents and more recourse to effective sanctions such as the police and course cancellation etc.
We do not want to take on responsibility for what is effectively the modern equivalent of the mail system when
such systems are already freely available.

We have blocked all personal email accounts, which force the students to use their school email. The problem
with external email accounts is that they can send email anonymously with minimal chance of tracing who the
mail is from. Forcing them to use school email allows your administrators to track the mail sent, minimise
plagiarism as they can check their account, etc.
The kids are quite annoyed but I believe it is a necessary measure and am weathering the storm at the moment.

Do your kids use/check their school email or do you use their personal (hotmail etc) email addresses?
We have trouble here getting students to use their school email.

Your blunder may be just the catalyst to start a thread on how schools communicate with there students.
It would appear that you communicating with your students via email is a very 'normal' thing for you.
How do others see this? Progressive or 'normal'?
