[Year 12 IT Apps] Show file extensions?

I am aware of this problem and in my school where this is a problem it is due to information dictated by the department themselves and not my technicians... I am trying to see what I can do to assist in changing this.. as some of the deet rollout of windows does not allow things it is as if they have changed the system...
well that is my 2 cents worth..
cheers

Roland - Seems there are a few of us who have no right click! But an excellent idea to associate mp3's with Audacity.
I had intended to start Audacity with my Year 10's today - about 3 weeks ago I checked that audacity was installed on the computers in my room and no probs.
However it appears it is installed on about one third of them, and most had no sound - overall about 5 kids out of 27 in the class had both audacity and sound - well so much for THAT multimedia educational experience - techs, not teachers controlling the curriculum again!!! I was also of the belief that every computer in the room was identically imaged but obviously not!
So what did the students do for the lesson? - I let them play games - we have just finished GameMaker so the stipulation was it must be a game that a member of the class had created!!!!
OK... now I need to switch to Plan B (which I don't actually have yet) and do another topic until PCs all get reimaged over the next hols (the only time our tech will reimage!).
Gee it was so cool working in a laptop school!!!
Cheers
Ros :-)

Gosh, wasnt there a school on this list that blocked the right mouse click function (click and hold for my Mac friends) for all it's potential hostile actions?
Last year my tech took away the file extensions on a wimsey that it would stop students from changing mp3 files to .. dat .js or other obscure extensions. Drove me nuts until we removed it with the next Zenworks reimage of the computer labs. I had kids fumble with web pages that would not work with .bmp files with boundless frustration over .html and .htm file extensions. I never want to revisit those days, my hair cover is only just recovering.
Regards Roland
PS: We did leave one change he put in place. MP3 files are now associated to play with Audacity. If it is good enough to listen to, they might as well learn how to edit and remix :-)

I agree - turn on the file extensions - and boo to MS for dumbing down the IT experience by turning them off by default!!
No right click on the desktop? - it sux major doesn't it - our kids cannot even get into My Computer or their home directories, and must do all their file management via Word (go open file then rename, organise etc!!)
It comes back to the old question - is the network there for the techs or there for the kids? Personally I feel with the way our computers are locked down and the fact that we are limited to educache - not to mention that the newest computers the kids have access to are over 4 years old (and these were purchased at the end of the lease - no consultation with IT staff - and there is no intention of replacing them in the foreseeable future) - we may as well put them all in glass display cases - then have a lesson from the whiteboard on "what we could do with ICT if only we had access to it!!"
I am so frustrated I am considering resigning atm.
Cheers
Ros

I certainly prefer file extensions to be shown.
OK so the kids do not do it at home, but it used to be that turning off file extensions meant that if you received an email with an attachment kornikova.jpg.txt all you saw was the kornikova.jpg As an innocent you opened the attachment and it ran as a script on your computer - viruses were/are spread this way. (Gee wasn't it different in the 8 + 3 days)
So let's "teach 'em right" and shame on Microsoft for even introducing that option.
