Amen.

I want to paste an email sent some time ago. 16/7/07

Can anyone clarify please?

Do the students mind map the problem-solving methodology as in the text
book or the PSM and all the bits that they do - so more specific to
their own processes?

The assessment guide mentions all the phases? i'm not really sure.

Thank-you, Litsa

The study design requires the students to record their decisions and
actions when creating a solution to the problem. I don't think they
need
to tediously record every decision made for the stages of the
problem-solving methodology, but rather to identify some key decisions
that had to be made (e.g. what form of user documentation) and what
actions they took (how did they carry out the decision) when solving
the
problem. The evaluation of their problem solving strategies could be
also recorded in this visual representation (for example, a
bubble/callout could house a comment, such as 'my decision to create
'x'
allows the user to simultaneously view documentation advice and their
own solution ...'

Students could, for example, use the following approach (of course,
they
would make it look visually appealing!):

 Decision Options
Action
            Impact of decision/action

(list the decision) (record available options)
(indicate action taken - could colour code option selected)
(evaluation component)

Paula

Again... Why would you use a planning tool to snail trail a decision
path.

Paula, can you please give further clarification to the "for
example..." that you gave at the end of your response. My email
application can make no sense of it. as it is presented.

Regards

Brendyn

I guess I see teaching thinking skills as a little like teaching
flowcharting. Provide kids with a structure/rules that they can use,
rather than a wishy washy structure that could mean anything.

At the end of the day, the reality is that VCAA have not provided
enough
resources (either through study design or assessment guide) or PD on
this
SAC (sorry Paula) and we are all going about it in the best way that
we
know how, from what ever knowledge base we have. Just in time PD
through
mailing lists is really not acceptable! I wonder if any other subjects
use
thinking tools in this way?

We are introducing our kids to thinking tools that I have learnt about
through PD events that I have attended. Our "workbook" is a way of
providing the kids with a scaffold that they can use throughout the
SAC
to
structure their thinking.

When they come to Task 3, they can use their notes to construct their
visual thinking diagram knowing that they have developed their
thinking
throughout the SAC. Given the calibre of kids in this class, this type
of
scaffolding *is* needed to support their learning.

Perhaps I am a bit over enthusiastic .. I am what I am!!

:)
