Yeah, ok, me and my big mouth!
To Diane: I have emailed you about this. Sorry if you felt I was getting at you - no way. Your contributions to the list will be valued by all other list members.
To Kevork: Yes let us try to encourage all list users to post attachments to a web stie such as edulists and keep the emails small

Hi Folks,
There is an automatic cut-off at 1 MB when it comes to the total size of any email ( with or without attachments ) . Any size under that amount is acceptable as far as we have been operating in 2006. If this size is too large we need to revisit it. But then again, where is the limit ? 500KB ? ( Diane's file landed at 481KB ) , 250 KB ? or 100 KB ?
We did have a bit of a barney about this issue some time back, and we agreed to cater for the majority hence the 1MB limit enfroced through the lists. Anything larger does not get through and is returned to the sender with a message asking to trim the size and send again.
Unless there is a big outcry, we are working on the 1MB limit for all attachments.
Best Wishes

Sorry everyone - I was so excited to finish and send it, I wasn't thinking of the file size.

Perhaps a New Year resolution for us all!
I was out of the city over the New Year weekend and had only a dial-up connection available. So found a recent email + attachment from the list a very slow download at 668K in size. Interesting but -
even with broadband, why take up time and space sending large attachments to everyone. Could we upload any interesting materials to a suitable place and send out details of the materials in the email together with a link for those who are interested.
As a sidelight, it is interesting to note just how much the email encoding increases the size. In the above example the email came in at 668K but the attachment itself was only 493K. I have read somewhere - source lost in the mists of time - that MIME encoding can increase the size by up to 50%. Tried it out for myself by composing two emails with attachments. Three .jpg files total size 1,740K created an email of size 2,386K while one .bmp file of 9,259K created an email of size 12,671K
