Kevork,

Another advantage of microwave is the security

Hi Folks,

Just reading through Section B again and my thoughts ( final ) for
your
consideration.

Q 8 -- Another hazard would be security or lack thereof. Greenhouses
are not
known for tough exterior walls so I guess theft of the computer and a
trip
to cash converters might be tempting for some.
Protection would have to come via a solid construction room inside or

attached to the greenhouse with all six sides ( walls , floor and
ceiling )
to be strong enough not to be breached and probably alarmed ( and
cooled ) .

A10 - Dial up is too prohibitive ( are there phone plans that cap the
local
call costs per month ?? ) whilst ideal for the data volume.
Broadband is overkill for data volume but affordable for fixed

capped cost per month.
Microwave is possible it seems ( up to 5 km --
http://www.corning.com/docs/opticalfiber/wp6321.pdf ) but we have no
idea
about installation cost, any recurrent costs and whether maintenance
may
come into it. I am thinking Lucy would be responsible for her own
maintenance once installed. Not a nice choice. But what are the
examiners
seeking as justification to rule it out ? Cost ?

Q 11 -- If Lucy wants to compare data ( humidity, temp , light ) over
different times of the year to decide what the best growth conditions
are I
am guessing she needs to do lots of data access . Ok, so if that is
the
case , of her file storage options she can use random access or
sequential.
Sequential would be too slow as the device has to read everything
between
current location and desired location . So random access would be
better
wouldn't it ?
If we are suggesting sequential is better because it allows
export/import that would only be the case after all the year's data has
been
entered after which a single export would then be ok for use in other
applications. ( Then again, why wouldn't a random access file not
export
equally well ? ) But Lucy may want to monitor things throughout the
year
and for that reason I am inclined to think the examiners' are looking
at
random access for speed.
As for each record being the same size, I thought that was a given as
data
is sampled every 5 mins. We would like temp, humidity and light
consistently
every 5 mins to go into 1 record.

The VET IT exam was on today -- anyone want to meet me on that list
for a
chat ? And we are still running Cisco exams Semesters 2 and 4 (
securing
routers with access lists and configuring LANs and WANs with Frame
Relay ,
NAT and PAT- any takers there ?? ::))

See you all next week at the big one ( VITTA conference )
