re:files - you're correct that you don't have full blown application rights ...like many scripting languages

I haven't used actionscript for the past yaer but from memory loadvars function can read/write to files.
i'll have to check my laptop later
eg
var date = new LoadVars();
date.load("date.txt");
etc

Yes you can do alot in flash without scripting at all... but that doesn't detract from what you can do with it. It seems to have great potential for less datacentric web apps   ie games.
