Frank, the short answer YES the same here

I have found the texts in many places "fluffy" in how
they explain the different aspects.  It is like wading
through cotton wool where the students are
extrodinarially confused at the end of it.

I have had numerous times trying to explain what the
text is actually trying to say.

Or as you said it doesn't really work like that
anymore.

So I have where possible talked about the
historical/original theoretical situations (which is
what they are talking about in the texts) so that they
can see the very BLUNT difference that they will need
for the exam.

I know writing text books is extremely difficult but
if the students want to learn this work in
consultation with the teacher it does need to be
looked at.
