[Year 12 IPM] moodle

Totally agree - there is no such thing as a perfect solution...

Solutions gather momentum from their power, flexibility, responsiveness,
user base, price and philosophy.
Moodle is powerful for education in that it has built in functions that
model many aspects of educational course delivery.
It is flaky in many areas (wiki) and undeveloped in others (embedded files,
user file management, print layout, calendar functions)
It is highly flexible in that it has so many features that can be "twisted"
to support novel applications (wiki as a staff manual, a shared textbook or
a group project tool. Forum as information sharing, group task with
individual assessment etc etc).
It is highly flexible in that it is so amenable to user tweaking due to the
open and relatively well structured code.
It is responsive in that the open source community is continually developing
additional features and improved functionality based on feedback from the
growing community of schools and universities that use it.
It's user base is still small and nowhere near as influential as that for
Blackboard/ WebCT but is developing.
It's price on the other hand can't be beaten ($0) when compared to other
comparable products - even including the Vic Govt "UltraNet" which will
most likely be an expensive, bureaucratic, un-tweakable, proprietary
product.
It's philosophy - open source and tolerant of many learning approaches - is
one of it's most attractive features. The concept of community development
of community solutions is returning to the internet in force after a few
decades in which it seemed that user pays would totally rule the web. We
should support this for moral reasons - as well as financial.
Forgot to mention that it is a proud Australian product.

I wish that an Aust Govt would get behind it so that it can be developed
(transformed?) into something that is far more powerful, flexible,
responsive, with a huge user base while retaining the zero price and open
philosophy.

Until then, we have choices to "lock in" commercial products which
increasingly require large annual licenses rather than any form of
ownership, let alone control.

Daniel

Moodle can do many things, in fact, I have seen several examples where it
has been pushed into some really otherwise untested areas. For everything
that I list as a failing I'm sure a creative and passionate moodler could
offer me a solution.

I believe however that it may not be the best solution. If it was, then we
could do away with so many other web based packages. Why are there products
like Scholastic, Synergetic, MAZE, Denbi etc Not to mention the herd of
proprietary written intranets. You can mow an oval with a 26" cut ride on
mower, but it's best done with a 72" cut golf style fairway mower.

Don't be shy everyone. Join in.

I would be interested to hear any moodle 'failings' that you may have
experienced.

At the risk of being flamed.

Moodle is not the answer to everything! :-)

Its is a great curriculum support/delivery but it is not a substitute for a
well designed intranet/internal information system.

Can I add my voice to this request? I think this would be a great idea.

Rob

There is a moodle mailing list set up on edulists and and there are many
of using it both professionally and personally to do a number of things.

Get on that list and perhaps come along to the next interest group
(moot) being organised.
