You might want to take a look at LiveLAMP  http://www.livelamp.org/ 
It's a liveCD that makes setting up a student PHP development server
very simple.
The liveLAMP mailing list is very helpful if you find you need some help
with any aspect of the process - and the archive is public.

Peter Ruwoldt in South Australia has put together some info on using
