Civilization is one of those games that students can enjoy.

A free variation of the classic 'Civilization' is called FreeCiv.  It
uses most of the same types of rules and looks almost the same, but it
is free, so no payment needed.  There are free FreeCiv servers running
all the time on the Internet, but you can start your own within the game
software if a school firewall blocks you.  Heaps of tutorials and forums
for the diehard Civ fans.
