[Year 12 IPM] Study Scores

Hi listers
Remember that the study score is not directly related to the actual
score received from sacs and exams. The sacs and exams result put
everyone into a long line - sometimes with spaces - especially in
smaller subjects.
This long line is then used to fill a normal curve.
So in IPM there are usually 45 (I think -- check this ) students who
obtain a 50 and then 44 students get a 49 and then 52 students get a 48
and so on.
In systems 7 students get a 50, six get a 49 eight students get a 48
and so on. In smaller studies where there are not that many students
there can be gaps (look at the smaller LOTEs for example).

That is why not everyone who gets a 50 gets a premiers prize. A few
years ago I had 3 students in IPM get a fifty and they each had
different sac scores. Clearly they did not all have the same result yet
all of them received a 50.

The real message out of this is that your study score represents where
you came in the line - not how well you did - though it does give some
degree of comparison.
This is also why results from one year to the next are not comparable.
This is also why scaling is applied. (that is another whole can of
worms and needs a really deep explanation and rationalisation )

Cheers Andrew

Hi Geraldine,

The full report of scaling for 2005 is at
http://www.vtac.edu.au/pdf/2005_scaling_report.pdf
This shows IPM scores of 40, 45 and 50 are scaled to 37, 43 and 50
respectively.
More generally, it covers all subjects and all scaling at all score
levels
except smaller studies.
Check out a score of 50 for Latin == > gives you 55 as does Specialist
Maths.
Unfortunately all IT ( IPM, Systems and VET IT ) are scaled down.
Anyone want to discuss further ??

Best Wishes

Could somebody please help me in answering a question I had from a
student
this week. In IP&M, if the study score is over 40 is it still scaled
down??
Thanks in anticipation.
