[Year 12 IPM] Proxy avoiding web sites and individual useraccounts

At Patterson River we do the same - $10 at the start of the year. (and anoth=
er $10 is allocated from their I.T. subject levies, if they have been paid)=
If the kids use it up within the first week, so be it! They then have to=
buy a recharge voucher from the office which comes in denominations of $5.0=
0 and they can top up either print or net balance as needed. The vouchers a=
re generated by our technician and it doesn't seem to be too time consuming.=
They have a special code on them - when the kids log into the system they=
click onto the Gaia icon, select Recharge, type in the code and away they g=
o.

A handy feature is that you can transfer balances between printing and charg=
ing - if they have gone easy on the printing and hard on the internet, they=
 can transfer money across.

Another good feature is that when they log in they can click onto the Gaia i=
con and see what they have used up - it shows details of the date and time,=
how much was downloaded etc. Same for printing. So they can see if they a=
re "getting low" at any time and top up before they completely run out. Its=
also useful with claims about someone "using up their internet credit" - yo=
u can track down what was used and when.

Finally, I don't think its a bad thing to teach the kids a bit about budgeti=
ng and restraint, thats life, after all!

Cheers,
Janet Bane, Patterson River SC.

p.s. if you want to know more about Gaia, just search google for it.

At Bentleigh we charge 10 cents per Mb, 10 cents per page monochrome, 50 cen=
ts per page colour. Kids get $10 credit at the beginning of the year for eac=
h whether they pay fees or not.

Do you give the students a starting balance on each account and, if so, how
much

thanks

system is called Gaia Print and Net charger. Not only do we charge for
internet usage, we also charge 10c per print out. Its amazing what "needs"
to be accessed and what doesn't when they have to pay for it!

troves of proxy avoiding web sites (e.g. vtunnel, kproxy, flyproxy etc. etc.
etc.) with multiple variations of each of these and numerous others as the
URL. Most of these sites are secure (i.e. https:// <https://www.edumail.vic.=
gov.au/> <https:/// <https://www.edumail.vic.gov.au/> > rather than
http:// <http:///> <http:///> ) so are difficult to block or usually totall=
y
unblockable using the SINA front end. The Year 10-12 students are
particularly notorious for this kind of behaviour. Blocking the source IP
address appears to be the only rather fragmented solution to this problem .
. . but this essentially amounts to a game of catch up . . . and without a
full time tech. usually means a call to Editure . . . who aren't always 100%
successful either.

I am now considering taking away individual user accounts for student
Internet use and having Learning Area, Year Level or some other account
structure where teachers enter the password for students in their care.
