I agree.
I have found that labels are very flexible ways of getting more info onto the course main page.
I have found that speed increases markedly when I remove the mini-calendar.
The screen looks a bit different in different browsers (esp column width) but basically, I am more interested in cramming in more
content while retaining conceptual clarity.  
I believe in max info on minimum pages to keep the site tree as pruned as possible to avoid fruit that no-one can find.

When I click on to other people's Moodles I often find myself thinking - how did they do that? How did they get that block there?

Would anyone else be interested in exploring how others have customised their Moodle front page? Themes would come into this but I
am more interested in the use of various blocks and their arrangement on the page to increase usability.
