Hello Graham
We find it easiest to insert sound files this way. (we use windows xp)
First, ensure that the sound file and powerpoint presentation are saved in the same folder for use 
away from your laptop or desktop)
Goto Insert>sound from file>select your soundfile from the folder where it is saved>select 
automatically (sound will play automatically then)
A sound icon appears and you are back on your first slide.  Move the sound icon to the working 
space at the side of the slide.
Right click on the icon> select custom animation>start after previous
Whilst still in custom animation, select the sound file where it appears on the side window. A menu 
appears
Goto effect options on option tab>under stop playing, select after and then choose the last slide if 
you want it to play all the way through or the appropriate number of slides that you want it to
