[Year 12 IPM] A Pre-SAC Mini-Test for U3O2

Yes Sylvia.
I do give them the scenario well before the sac - in fact I give it to
them at the start of our U3O2 preparation period. This is to give them a
context for their learning, rather than have the many concepts we teach
them being purely theoretical. My mind works best that way, (as a
student), so I do it that way.
As we work our way through various software packages (Photoshop, Vegas
Movie Studio, DreamWeaver, IrfanView, Flash) and various pieces of
equipment (scanner, digital camera, digital video camera) the students
are assembling the unique pieces of resource files they will be issued
with in the SAC. I find this approach highly motivating, as they can see
immediate payoff for effort.
They are also allowed to present to me as resources, notes they have
made as they studied Chapters 3 & 4 (Potts). These are stamped as
"official" and nothing else is permitted. These are to be handed in
three days before the sac.
In previous years I have used one scenario for the build-up and trial
SAC, then hit them with a totally new one in the SAC, but my philosophy
is that I want the SAC to accurately measure their ability to apply U3O2
skills and knowledge in a "known" situation. Some students have great
difficulty empathesizing with the characters in a scenario and so this
weakness can obscure knowledge they do possess and can apply, and so the
mark they get is distorted. I therefore decided this year to obviate the
differentiation that a totally new scenario might provide, and have them
all understand that aspect fully.
Regards, Keith
