Subject: [Year 12 IPM] Exam Short Answer Question 2
Hi all
Just a question re SA Q2:
If my memory serves me well ;-), Mark's solution stated
"Split the name field and sort alphabetically" ... is this any more
efficient than just sorting the customer field alphabetically and matching
first name then surname etc...
Also how will splitting the address field or having a standard phone field
make looking up customer details more efficient?

Hello Oliver,
Splitting the address field in a database allows you to search for
particular suburbs far more efficiently, (eg how many customers do I have in
Balwyn?) It also allows indexing on these fields to speed searching.
I don't understand your question re names. Are you suggesting sorting the
custId field? Mark's solution allows a far more efficient and elegant way of
using your db as a source for mail merges?

Thanks Ron
I made 2 assumptions
1. "wanting to look up customer details" meant find a customer and
2. an electronic file could be from a database, spreadsheet, word processing
etc...
BTW I agree with your answer re atomic attributes (1NF)
