Thank you to all those that provided feedback on Kahootz both on and
off the list. It was very helpful and the diverse range of opinions on
Kahootz is really interesting.
For what it's worth I think Kahootz is a good way to introduce animated
graphics to year 7 and 8. I don't think I will use it past those
levels. When I first started using it I used the samples from the
Kahootz web site and CD and found things very difficult. Students got
stuck easily then 'played' with the program and wasted time. There
wasn't much skill development from about half the class. I stopped the
unit (a bit of self preservation I guess) until I could write more
directed activities because I didn't want the learning process to take
several weeks or more. If you have more motivated students than I have
you might not experience the same problems. Basically my aim is get
the students using the program efficiently in IT so that when I go to
other teachers of the class and suggest they do a project using Kahootz
(eg animate a story in English or describe historical events in SOSE,
etc) the students will know how to use the program and hopefully be
productive and creative for the teacher concerned. A trouble-free
experience with Kahootz might encourage that teacher to pursue other
ICT activities.
