At Bentleigh SC we have also lined up the Year 10's with a VCE block which contains 11 Unit 1/2 VCE/VET subjects. All Year 10's choose a VCE or VET subject from within this block. We have run this system for 3 years now, and Info Tech has really benefitted - we have 3 Yr 11 IT classes - 2 in this 10/11 block and one other with only Yr 11 students. We do not run any Year 11 IT as such.

This also means that the students can then complete one unit 3/4 subject while they are in year 11 (although they can choose not to and just do 6 Year 11 subjects). The other benefit is that we have 3 IPM classes at year 12. Definitely no falling IT rates here! The most noticeable trend is that the year 11 students usually fair as good as if not better than the year 12 students in IPM. This is also noticeable in other subjects in the block such as Psych and Legal Studies.

It is amazing how quickly the Year 10 students become engaged, enthused and motivated with their Year 11 subject - for many this will be the best mark they get for the year. Personally I treat them all as year 11's and sometimes have to do a reality check when some of them remind me that they are actually Year 10's.

Of course the other benefit is that it gives them all a head start on their ENTER score.

I know that there are schools who insist on an A or B+ average before allowing Year 10's to choose a VCE Unit 1/2 subject, and then they limit the choices to maybe one or two subjects, but I can wholeheartedly recommend this system.

We have lined up yr 10 with VCE blocks, same number of periods per week. yr
10 can then access VCE subjects

Yr 9 has been completely remodelled and forms are based on a theme approach
from technology, outdoor ed health/pe, arts, drama + music. English and
maths are related to their theme of arts, music, technology etc. Also
students have a challenge day where they select an area of interest such as
drama/music or furniture restoration, robotics, cycling, outdoor ed,
journalism etc..This should be only half day in my opinion.
