Dear colleagues
I subscribe to an electronic newsletter The Question Mark by Jamie
McKenzie. Jamie McKenzie focuses on developing questioning skills for
deeper learning.
The link below provides information about synthesis which I believe is
important in the design process. The focus of this particular piece is
on 'synthesis for making things better'. This is important for
understanding how to achieve an optimum, quality product or system -
this includes analysis and evaluation.

A link from the above link is also worth looking at
http://fno.org/jun01/building.html 'Building Good New Ideas'.
A synthesis strategy 'SCAMPER' is described. A similar strategy is
outlined in the Design Awareness in Schools material on the VELS website
http://vels.vcaa.vic.edu.au/support/dais/process.html in the design
process section. Go to Designing worksheets and open the link (Word or
PDF) under the dot point Innovative design and problem solving.
Hope you find this useful.
Regards, Lorraine.
