$3000 YOUNG WRITERS PRIZE

Young writers across Australia are invited to enter the first Young Calibre
Prize, presented by Australian Book Review and Copyright Agency Limited.

The prize is for an outstanding piece of imaginative non-fiction, of length
1000-3000 words.

First prize is $3000 plus publication in Australia's leading literary
review, Australian Book Review.

This is an unprecedented opportunity for young writers to gain national
recognition.

Teachers note: Writing an entry for Young Calibre is the perfect writing
task for students. Incorporate Young Calibre into your teaching of
biography, historical narrative, journalism and cultural studies, and
encourage students to enter their class work into the competition. Students
unfamiliar with the personal essay form will be excited to discover Tom
Wolfe and American Gonzo, Helen Garner's The Feel of Steel, Quarterly Essay
and other popular examples for the first time.

What are some suggested subjects?
Original thoughts on any life subject
Books and writing
Art and music
Journeys and travel
History and the future
Environmental issues
Study and education
Work and unemployment
Politics and economics
Popular and unpopular culture
Media and technology

'What a prize! What an incentive! I'll be promoting the Young Calibre to all
my writing students. Thanks, ABR, for this wonderful encouragement of
youthful creativity and passion.'

Dr Ruth Starke, Writer-in-Residence, Flinders University

Guidelines and application form are now available on the ABR website:
www.australianbookreview.com.au. Entrants must live in Australia or be
Australian citizens living overseas. Multiple entries are permitted, and all

Closing date for entries is 1 December 2009.
