english Digest, Vol 25, Issue 15My VCAL class absolutely adored Herrick's The Simple Gift. (Boy runs away from home meets girl of his dreams and is helped by everypone to reshape his life into something worthwhile. And they lived happily ever after) 

I had the utmost difficulty convincing them that it was a fairy story but that lead to some wonderful discussion. All 20 of them were interested (most said it was the best book they had ever read, giving it 5 out of 5 stars). We did Lotus diagrams prior to writing and all of them wrote in excess of 600 words on it (A real achievement for this group)

(If you don't know about Lotus diagrams it would be worth your while to Google it.  They are an excellent tool for those who need structure and organisation! They are also great for shaping research.)

  Simon,

  We use the Cambrige Literacy Work Book for some of the reading and writing outcomes.  "Whale Rider", the film, for a writing outcome.  Students are sourcing some of their own reasearch material and we may do another film later in the year.
