Hello everyone,
I rushed to read the Mark Lopez article following your postings. My first
reaction was to feel a pang of pity for the student that Mr Lopez was
tutoring. Perhaps he was disadvantaged by having a tutor who appears to have
confused the word 'inferred' with 'implied'. Surely, as proponent of an
idea, Mr Lopez was implying the existence of conservative poets. Surely he
was hoping that his student might make some agreeable inferences about the
existence of conservative poets?
Mr Lopez could have made himself clearer by providing us with an example.
Perhaps there is an Australian Thomas Newton? (I hope not!)
On a more broadly philosophical level, was the student misdirected by a
tutor who manages to reduce Salam Pax from a hero risking his life to
publish rebellious thought to a mere author of anti-war texts? Did this
student feel obliged to write an essay about the Kite Runner, deriding its
author for encouraging those queue-jumping illegal immigrants from
Afghanistan? It seemed to me that this novel encouraged thoughts and
discussion far more humane than this.
Farewell,
Tony
