[elearning] Makerspace

Hi we have a developing Makerspace at our school. It's a work in progress, but basically we have access to an old store room adjacent to a classroom. The storeroom we keep all the equipment; students would take them out to the classroom to play with them.
We have a 3D printer (also has issues with reliability), a few Makey Makeys, a Raspberry Pi where kids can make Minecraft Mods with Python programming, a few Little Bits kits, Arduino kits, and a whole lot of donated old laptops and computers and electronic equipment from the community. Kids love taking things apart (and then not putting things away lol). A few more savvy are repurposing and rebuilding them. We also have recycled containers and boxes and lego to make stuff with - ideally combine with the little bits kits to make something. We have a few tutorials on things but rely on a lot of online resources like codeacademy etc and encourage students to work things out themselves. We tend to get younger kids from Years 7-9 in, but not always the kids with the skills you want to help support the others due to it running only after school on Thursdays (due to staff commitments volunteering their time to supervise.) I find students also struggle to stick to one project so lots of unfinished projects. They also want to know but don't want to invest their time learning things. I'm happy to answer more questions or do tours of our space, and I'm always looking for more ideas to improve on things.

Hi Everyone
We are planning to build a Makerspace and wondered if anyone has created a space at their school or is planning to do so. We are seeking advice and a sharing of ideas about design, equipment, location and access. We would love to see one setup if possible.
We are hoping to provide access to digital fabrication through the use of 3D printers, CNC mill and Laser Cutter. Has anyone had success with 3D printers, we currently have 3, but are not happy with their reliability. Can anyone provide insight into the suitability of the various Laser Cutter makes and models (and costs) for use in the classroom.
Any information and advice would be greatly appreciated. Contact me on or off list.
Thanking you in advance.

Gary Bass and John Widmer have done some really good ruminating in this area with the Mag-Net team. I am about to kick off a national survey for maker-spaces, similar to that for Robots in the Australian Classroom that I ran last year (waiting to get it over the Ethics approval hurdle). All I need is an EOI sent to me (off list please) for anybody who is interested in contributing or hearing the news first hand. Here is a Youtube video that I made of the wonderful FabLab at the Lauriston Girls' School that I saw whilst at the http://fablearnaustralia.com <http://fablearnaustralia.com/> Hackathon.

Happy to drop past next week week at GWSC Colin & St Joseph?s Domenic if we can work out a time, I can go over some of this in more detail with you over a brew.
