G"day fellow IT Teachers,
Looks like some great regional workshops for Victorian teachers to
improve the lot for programming and computational thinking. Details
from Bruce below or you can click on this link for more info. Please
share this with any secondary IT, primary or regional teachers who may
be interested.

I wrote something up about CS4HS in Melbourne here
http://storify.com/rgesthuizen/cs4hs-1
and at a similar event at Sydney Uni last April here

I must admit that I was really impressed by the NSS Challenge in
Sydney and will be registering myself and senior IT students to join
in this year. It runs over 5 weeks from August to September. Just
click here to register your expression of interest and join us :-)

Subject: [Oz-teachers] CS4HS Workshops in Canberra, Armidale and Bendigo
Hi everyone,
On behalf of InTERACT, the association currently being established in
the ACT for teachers and researchers of IT in education, I'd like to
let everyone on the list know about a series of CS4HS Workshops being
run that explore how Computer Science can be used in the general
curriculum to develop the understanding students have of what they are
learning, particularly how it relates to the way computers help us
understand and make use of information. The workshops are being
supported by Google, the University of Canberra's new INSPIRE Centre
for ICT Education, the University of Sydney and the National Computer
Science School, the University of New England and La Trobe University.
The workshops are being delivered in three streams tailored
specifically to the needs of teachers in Primary Schools, Secondary
Schools and IT Teachers in Secondary Schools. Places are limited in
each stream at each event, and registrations are currently open.
The dates of these events are:
Canberra - 1st June
Armidale - 14th June
Bendigo - 12th July
In addition to these teacher events, workshops for students are being
held in conjunction with these that will give students an opportunity
to participate in practical activities that will give them an
understanding of computer science and a chance to develop programming
skills. These workshops are targeted at high school students (Years
8-12), and are designed such that students with extensive programming
experience will get something out of them just as students who have no
experience will too. The dates for these events are:
Canberra - TBD
Armidale - 15th June
Bendigo - 13th July
Complete details of the events can be found at
http://iterate.inspire.edu.au/ as well as flyers that can be printed
and or distributed electronically to colleagues and students in
schools across the relevant geographical areas. We encourage teachers
in government, independent and catholic schools to consider this as an
opportunity to be involved in some professional learning that wouldn't
necessarily always be available in these regional centres, and to
share this opportunity with their students.
As an added bonus/incentive for participants to get involved, we are
including membership to the InTERACT association for 2012 as part of
registration, and this gives participants access to a network that
will ultimately offer ongoing networking and professional learning
opportunities online (for members who may not reside in the ACT or
nearby) and face-to-face at schools across the region. Also, any
surplus funds that may remain after the workshops have been delivered
will be made available to participants through a grant application
process that will support them to develop resources and/or purchase
equipment that will enable them to deliver similar programs and
learning opportunities for students at their schools. This grant
opportunity will only be available to participants in the workshops.
If you live in or near any of the regions I have identified, I would
ask you to consider this PD opportunity and share it with others in
your region. We hope to cast a wide net that catches teachers and
pre-service teachers of all disciplines who are interested in
investigating how they can integrate not just ICT, but technical
computer science concepts into their existing curriculum structures.
If you don't live in the region but are active on social networks or
know people who may be able to help spread the word, please share
these details with your friends and help promote this event.
Again, the website with all of the details and links to registration
forms can be found at http://iterate.inspire.edu.au/
If you have questions, you can direct them to me on- or off-list, or
email the address on the website.
Cheers,
Bruce
PS. Sent as a promotional activity for InTERACT, a (soon-to-be)
affiliated member of the ACCE. Reminders will be sent for each event
as registration closing dates approach.
